Boiler short cycling and losing pressure – winter heating issue

Hey guys, looking for some advice from anyone who knows about home heating. Our boiler has been acting up over the past few days, and with the temperatures dropping outside, I'm getting worried. It keeps turning on and off every few minutes, which I think is called short cycling, and the pressure gauge on the front keeps dropping below the normal zone. I have to manually top it up with water almost every day now. We live in Ontario, so keeping the house warm is pretty critical right now. Does this sound like a broken expansion tank, or could it be a hidden leak somewhere in the pipes? I really want to have some idea of what's wrong before I call a local HVAC company.

That definitely sounds like a classic pressure loss issue, and you should probably check your expansion tank first. When the diaphragm inside those tanks fails, the pressure fluctuates wildly, causing the boiler to short cycle just like you described. Since you are in Ontario, the extreme cold makes the system work twice as hard, which speeds up these breakdowns. It's a very common issue in our region. I recently read a really comprehensive guide that covers these exact breakdowns, especially for common boiler models used around here, and it lists several pro fixes you can try. You can check out the full troubleshooting steps via this link to see if it matches your situation. It might save you from a costly emergency technician visit.
